Boil Awareness
by electroRock 2 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Dudes, there has been a recent problem with people catching boils at the academy. problem is i dont think many people know what they are. Its like a giant very painful pimple but its related to Staph Infections and can get bad very quick. I can understand training with a little skin rash or ring worm but if you have a boil and train your going to pass that onto alot of people because ur oozing puss on the mat. If you think you have this please take some time off and let it heal, with proper care it should run its course in a week or so, thats not to much to ask. Now the sucky thing is someone gave it to you in the first place but dont make it worse by passing it on to other people, Look after your team mates! Im just posting this because i want to raise a little boil awareness, many people are training for the Mundials in LA and catching one this close to the competition is going to ruin alot of training and planning, not to mention the cost of flights etc This is a good link http://www.medicinenet.com/boils/article.htmAnd if you see someone with a boil putting on a gi let them know what it is, because not everyone has the internets or what ever the kids are calling it these days.

yo man we should have posters around the academy like the ones they have in grammar school nurse's office. seriously this shit is beyond ringworm now, it's on some dangerous shit. please guys stay off the mat and don't tamper with shit you get on your skin and don't use cream unless its prescribed from your general doctor or dermatologist.

yeah, i got it last year...it didnt run its course and actually got pretty bad...still getting chased by the hospital collectors because i had to go to the emergency room, it started as just a little "cut" on my wrist, but somehow i ended up getting it under my right arm and then it spread to my left forearm...the hosp staff ruled it as staph, had to take antibiotics, and then when it spread to my forearm that just a month ago cleared up with cream, what suked is that i was over cautious always while training, i had long sleeve under armours always, i showered after class always, any cut i would cover with liquid bandage the minute i got out the shower, so it wasnt a cleanliness issue, i just got it from some one who had it while rolling...very depressing but yeah, i basically am being run down by educational funding whatever there name is, i sent them the docs note to try to suspend the pays, because i had to take time off,(i do contract stuff) but even though i havnt trained since nov. 3rd they are probably gona take me to the cleaners for nov, dec and jan etc. thing is i miss the hell out of training, and renzos is far and beyond the best bjj school in north america, the guys i rolled with are top class, and lets not forget about all the instructors, yeah i miss it, and as happy as i am for some of the guys it burns to see some fellas get promoted who i came in with, for now ill just have to rely on vids, anyways i really went off there, but yeah please if you have cream on your skin for a condition or if your freakin gi is brown and should be white, GET THE HELL OFF THE MAT, it really took the wind of my sails getting that damn infection so be considerate!!!!!! thanks and God bless

Since we're speaking about hygiene. Don't forget to clip your toe nails and finger nails. There is no reason why any of us should look like we just rolled with Freddy Kruger or some alley cats.

Guys these little pimples that are going around are no joke. I'm recovering from something that started off as a pimpled then by overnight turned into a quarter-size boil that had to be cut open and drained follow up by 8 antibiotics a day for two weeks. The culture came back and it tested positive for "mrsa" a form of staph resistant to most antibiotics. The best thing is for people to be more aware of their bodies. If you see anything thats unordinary, don't train. And there should be a rule that after rolling all kimonos must be washed. Wear your rash guards too for extra protection. You don't want to get this, it's nasty.

No disrespect to the higher belts but it appears that the boil problem is concentrated on the big mat and amongst blue/purple students. It's going around pretty bad within these 2 groups and I don't know of any white belt that caught that stuff yet so I guess it's out of the smaller mats or they are easier to clean than the big one. Either way props to the first poster and to all that raising awareness about this problem since it's really severe. I think it would be the case to ask gordinho to put this pic on the board with some message or something like that. Also I do agree with the hygiene concerns of many. The other day I was training and the guy "broke" his nails a couple of times (my neck paid for it). I don't understand why one would grapple and not cut toes and finger nails very short. Clean kimonos and personal hygiene are a must but we would think that everyone already knows that... not really
One thing I really think we should have is one of those alcohol/anti bacterial dispensers, right by the door. So you can came in, change into your training gear and all should use that before going in because we are coming from the street and most likely touched money/subway handle* or whatever. I always wash my hands before going in, but I don't know a lot of people do that.
It's time for a entire seminar about the subject.

Sorry Gaucho, but I don't think that the problem is concentrated mainly with Blue/Purple belts. It can affect anybody that trains, the color of your belt will not stop staphylococcus aureus from spreading.
New comers actually tend to not be aware about this issue or similar (ex:Tinea Corporis), and are probably the ones most at risk, since they don't recognize the symptoms, or don't know how to properly cure/prevent it. The previous posts were on target on what to do for prevention, and a timely visit to your doctor in case something looks abnormal is probably the best thing to do.
The only thing that I would like to ad is that, from my experience, all these skin problems tend to appear at times of stress, and when ones immune system is low.
I had Tinea, commonly known as Ringworm, a few times, and it always coincided with times when I was either trying to cut weight or overtraining.
Rashguards and soap help, but a healthy living and diet are the second best thing one can do.

I hear you Stallion, and you are right about the fact that anybody could catch. The reason I said blue/purples is because they are the majority of our students and they always train on the bigger mat. I see that there's someone from the academia that always cleans the smaller mats between classes and I don't know how often that happens on the bigger space. It seems to me that there's always someone there so the microorganisms are really having a good time there. I think it's time to approach one of the instructors to starting talking to people after class about this problem. For now I'm going to sit out for a few days to find out how severe is the problem and wait till it's entirely gone since my wife had a baby not long ago and I can risk catching any of that stuff because it's lethal to babies and is way too many antibiotics for them to take. If I tell the old lady that there's some stuff like that going around she's going to freak out on me.
