takedowns (1 viewing) (1) Guest

I think the most helpful thing for improving takedowns is to train "live" from standing. I havent been to any of John's classes in a long time, but I remember the second half of most of his classes (gi and no-gi) was all live training from standing. He also usually teaches a takedown every class with multiple variations. Learning and drilling takedowns( uchikomi)is completely different from executing them against someone who is actually trying to defend against them, or more likely take you down or pull you into their guard.

I agree. The problem is finding the opportunity to train stand-up. I guess maybe you get more opportunities at the higher ranks, but I've only had the occasional practice with stand-up.

I'd love to do more, even though I stink at it. After all, if I don't practice it I'll never improve.

alot of bjj academies have takedown classes once or twice a week, i think that would be an awesome idea to start that at rga.

I agree that that would be an awesome addition. I personally would not benefit from that because there are only a few times my schedule will allow me to attend class, but overall, I think that would be a great offering to have.

Who else is down for a takedowns class? Would it be at all possible to get a takedown class going? If any instructors or black belts see this thread, what do you guys think???

Even if we didn't have a class, it still might be possible for people to get together before a scheduled class and just experiment with takedowns.

I'm not talking fight-to-the-death takedown sparring; just lightly experimenting with your partner's balance and movement. I think doing that for, say, 10 minutes before every class would be instrumental in improving takedowns.

Absolutely. Well, perhaps RGA will consider adding a takedown class at some point.
